Bayern by RobCaswell Bayern by RobCaswell
The Bayern was a research starship from the RPG "Traveller: 2300" (later renamed "2300 A.D."). This image was created for a piece about the ship published in GDW's Challenge magazine, circa '87. Though I wasn't consciously thinking of it at the time, my stylized starfield has since reminded me of van Gogh's "Starry Night" [link] each time I've revisited it.

I agree with all these posts...seeing your art reminds me of the golden age of college gaming in the late 80's!

I am trying to re-live some of that fun with a new campaign, and am going to go into insane detail on the Bayern. In my campaign I always called the ship Orion (The great Hunter was always pursuing the 7 sisters; it seemed appropriate) and the computer Atlas (father of the mythological Pleiades).

With your permission first (I am just doing this for some fun with my old friends, nothing commercial), I would like to scale this great picture to design the ship decks. I know there is a great image of the vessel as if it was a blueprint from Polarstern Architekten, but that vessel is no where near to scale; entirely to large when reverse engineered from the data given in cannon.

Would you have an image of the drawing without the star field? That would enable written details with pointer lines to be easily seen. Thank you.

I wish I had the capital to ask Laurent Esmiol to render this in 3d.

Thanks again Arcas-Art for all your great work!

Please, feel free to use this drawing as a jumping off point for your own inspiration! I'm delighted that my work can still inspire some fun SF game play even decades after I drew it!!! :squee:

Oh my. I want model this vessel. Not good. I'd never make it to the 2300AD Calendar deadline if I'd try. ;)
Great work as usual...

Yeah, there's a lot to model here. Not a good choice for a limited deadline ;)

I'm not familiar with traveler, but this has a different sort of look to most spaceships I have seen; seems to sit somewhere between space opera and NASA goes to other planets.

Never realized this was yours!!!! I have always thought The Bayern and its module were fantastic. I used them over and over again in various settings. The star map was soooo cool too. I would honestly say that they are easily the most worn and used RPG modules I own:)

Any chance to see a colored version? I remember seeing a color scheme somewhere for starships; was it by Suricata? or someone else? I think this would look good using a post-STTNG/ Sovereign-era color scheme, mixing lighter and darker hues together....

I appreciate the wish for a color version, but the will (on my part) isn't there at the moment.

That is one well detailed ship and realistic looking as well. Never heard of Traveller 2300 but sounds quite interesting :)

It was an attempt at a well-realized future of humans expanding into the local neighborhood of stars. A noble goal, but I never felt that the game world quite met its goal.

Did it mainly did not work because of the backstory/storyarcs? The design does look good though so some well made thoughts were made into that.

There were a number of reasons it came up short. The answer is not simple. Nor is it as obvious from the outside looking in. The closest I can get is saying "great concept, disappointing execution". But there are still some neat creations associated with it and it's gone one of the best interstellar star maps in an RPG, ever!

It wasn't a generation ship, as I recall. It probably used the "stutterwarp" drive like all other 2300 starships. That is instead of making one big hyperspace jump it makes a LOT of tiny jumps that quickly add up to a sense of speed and travel.

HA! Cool! So you ran the adventure in the module? Until Bill reminded me, I forgot that this got its own adventure/book. I think the Bayern first came to life as a pet project in Challenge by Tim Brown.... if I'm remembering correctly. I may have been in the thick of 2300 production back then, but now it's all just kind of a fuzzy blur ;p

We've been running the module as a sort of minicampain, the modules the stop-overs the ship makes enroute on its voyage of exploration, its fun the way the various nationalities that make up the crew interact.
