Oh, a Caitian! Shame these guys were never seen outside of the animated series (save for a background character in one movie I think).

If it's any consolation, they are in Star Trek Online.

Don't forget though, for some younger folks, the J.J. Abrams film was their first introduction to Star Trek.  Now you may call that heresy, but many of them became intrigued and subsequently went back to watch the series' and older movies that they had previously never given a chance, finding now that they enjoy them, and becoming as devoted a fan as the rest of us.

The new movies may not have been great Trek, but they sure as hell were great appetizer.  The main course being Star Trek on Television.

Lots of people's first introduction to something is like that though, they see a film that's been adapted very loosely and then read the book and realise how different it is, or they see a remake and then find out about the original and go watch that out of curiosity, but discovering a good thing from a poor adaptation doesn't improve the adaptation.

My main problem with it though isn't the changes, it's the attempt at being part of the original continuity whilst having no continuity with the original, much like a DC comics style reboot rather than a remake in the same way as, say, Battlestar Galactica. Instead of feeling like a new thing that can be enjoyed separately, it feels like it's stomping all over the original by trying to be canon to the original without respecting the original canon, if that makes sense.

Actually... it isn't trying to be a part of the original continuity.  The very first moment of the first reboot film begins with a drastic change caused by a time traveling event.  They even flat out state in the film that they are in an alternate reality.

That's exactly it though, there's a time travelling event.
Remember how time works in Star Trek? It doesn't create alternate realities, it over-writes the existing timeline, as seen in... well, every time anyone in Star Trek time travels.

Not always.  There are numerous instances of alternative timelines or realities.

The biggest example is the "Mirror Universe" seen in TOS and multiple times in DS9.
A good TNG example is "Parallels" in which Data describes how every decision we make and every action creates an alternative quantum reality, as Worf was jumping back and forth between them.  Hell, they made up "Red Matter" for the film.  You can attribute any treknobabble you want to this magic red material, to create a separate reality from it.

The Prime Timeline even continues beyond the events mentioned before 2009 (namely the Hobus Supernova, and Spock disappearing) on Star Trek Online.  Oh, and by the way, STO is now OFFICIALLY licensed by both Paramount and CBS.  Events within and certain details are "soft-canon" but still canon.  This means, the Prime Timeline still exists IN CANON.

Ahhh, so many bad (and good, too!) puns in that series!

So, if a TV show's group of characters dwindles, is that a "cast atrophy?"

Well now we know who programmed all the replicators to create yarn balls, rubber mice, scratching posts and bags of catnip !

Would be interesting to have more anthro in Starfleet personnel.
