Routine Intergalatic Exploration by RobCaswell Routine Intergalatic Exploration by RobCaswell
Captain’s Log, Stardate 60423.6: I’m am unsure whether to revel in our relative quiet or dread it. While our continuing survey of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy has turned numbingly uneventful, in many ways it’s better than several months ago when it seemed Ma-Burah…. or, maybe as humans describe it, “The Fates”… wouldn’t give us a break, resulting in a number of casualties including Captain Mozyx. I have tried my best to make the spirits of the crew float after that trying time, but with so many Humans in the crew…well, our sensory clusters do not often equilaterally engage.

A Shuttlecraft is returning after doing a close inspection of a curious asteroid that seemed to be giving of signs or rudimentary, single-celled life forms embedded in its crust. I hope the sample returned by the away team yield positive results as we could use the excitement.

There’s a human expression that goes something like “beware of your wishes”. That sentiment bounces through my secondary evaluation lobes with increasing dread. I am sensing that our period of peaceful routine may soon be ending, which should not be unexpected from the Federations most ambitious and distant frontier exploration in many decades. The unfortunate side effect of this creeping feeling is that it has me chewing far too much Baree’bl fibers and I fear an impact in my job efficiency.

This is my first image of 2012… and I regret to report I’ve been stumped. Usually stories flow forth from my head and are easily translated into imagery, but lately… well, storytime has been next to impossible to achieve. But I figured that, if at least I crank out a fairly static, mundane image with a story (about a lack of story) attached, that it might help me get over the hump. We’ll see.

Well I have to say that this is one of the best images I have come across. Not a practitioner of this art form, but the way the ships seem to merge with the reflected color of the background almost reminds me of walking through a blizzard in Main as a kid. I am not that familiar with the vehicles. However, I really like the design of the shuttle. It is quite an original design and looks good in your art. Great Work!

Thanks for that comment and perspective. I weathered my youthful winters in the state next door, so we probably share that memory :)

Yeah, I like that shuttle/runabout a lot. It's a nice "halfway" between those two ship classes... and it's just got some simple and pretty lines, kinda like TOS' shuttlecraft, in spirit.

Hm. You make me think... Trek's been through so many incarnations, how unified is "the spirit of Trek" these days? For me that spirit comes from TOS... and then my creative ponderings of Trek's possibilities when it was a "dead property" in the 70's. The latter movies and TV series seemed to turn it a bit more towards soap opera and less towards evocative SF. So many of us view the show/property in so many different ways now. Roddenberry was an unabashed liberal socialist and that's the kind of future he tried to paint, but he was also a product of WW2 and the show happened during the Cold War. That has opened up many opportunities for a more militarist take on Trek.

Hm. Y'know, this could be a cool subject for a blog! I'll have to let it percolate. Thanks for tickling my brain... even if a bit inadvertently :)

I can't see the block here :)
What I can see (or rather feel) is the raising thrill and dread created by the interaction between the delusively passionless routine of a captain's log and the uninviting and threatening coldness and of the surrounding.
It is one of those classical moments where you just know that every next moment can (and will) kick you into the deepest imaginable mess and make you pray to be kicked back into dead-boring quietness.
And I can "hear" the stress in the captains voice.
No, bud,...I can't see any block here.
;)

But thanks for the encouraging words...

As an editor of science writing, I congratulate you on the correct use of "intergalactic." Most people seem to think it means the same as "intragalactic," "interplanetary," or "interstellar."

By the way, nice picture. Looks cold out there.

Well if I didn't use the word correctly, my alma mater might make me turn in my degree.
...which might not be entirely bad, as when people ask me what my degree was in, I wouldn't have to listen to, "Oh cool! Can you tell me my horoscope? I'm a Libra!"
