The Captive Moon

Description

This image came out of an idea that came to me when pondering possibilities within Space: 1999. While it seems trivial or mundane, the idea that the Alphans may have no choice in their journey's terminus due to the Moon being orbitally captured is a meaty concept. Their Moon is not a starship, so once it gets locked into an orbit, they're not going anywhere.... unless they hire themselves out as the local neighborhood nuke waste dump (again).

So what if the Moon did get captured, but in a system that seemed to have few to no plausible options for a new Alphan homeworld? It could make a neat "mini-series" treatment. If they get stuck in the middle of nowhere, what do they do without their "planet du jour" fix?

An interest solution might the discovery of a long dead Krell-level culture that ultimately DOES enable them to make the Moon into a real, drivable starship (shades of Niven's Puppeteer worlds....).

Anyway, here's a image from my idea, as Alpha sends out a survey craft to get a better look at the system that has become their forced stopping point.

Interesting idea and a plausible one. What if the Moon got locked into orbit around an unpromising planet or star? The whole Space: 1999 premise wouldn't work. It would take thousands of years for the Moon to reach the nearest star, even if there was an explosion big enough to knock it out of orbit yet not big enough to shatter it. I still loved their spaceships.

One idea I had was this: What if the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha actually found a habitable planet? What would their world be like a hundred, two hundred or more years later?
