The Quiet Rings by RobCaswell The Quiet Rings by RobCaswell
Captain’s Log, Stardate 60449.1 – Commander Naheed Tate, reporting. We have left The Egg and the SEG-CG477 and have resumed our explorations of the northern stretch of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy, though we have scheduled a comprehensive mission review to determine how the events of the last few months have altered our mission profile. But before then we have a bigger problem to resolve with our Captain.

Captain Green-One’s phase transition isolation was taking much longer than it should have so we were forced to break the Captain’s quarantine request. Before forcing an entry we chose to first do the civilized thing and ring the entry buzzer. To our surprise the door was quickly answered. To our greater surprise it was answered by two beings – both our Captain!?

Green-One is a Grunchut’t. They reproduce through an asexual process in which the adult divides into two copies of itself, complete with full memories. However this process is an elective action and was fully unintended by our Captain. We have been exposed to so many mysterious phenomena that it would be impossible to isolate the culprit, but clearly something forced an involuntary reproduction reflex.

On its surface this may seem like a boon to us. Green-One has been a good Captain – especially being unexpectedly thrust into the role after the death of Captain Mozyx. However Grunchut’t psychological development seems to act against their favor. As a Grunchut’t pair develops they both go through a sort of rejection process, not unlike “teen rebellion” in Humans. So after a time the two Captains could end up countermanding each other in a most chaotic fashion.

As a result of this event I may be forced to assume command, but not until we’ve exhausted all other options to give Green-One the opportunity to command the mission it’s earned. Dr. Paj and his team have some theories to test, but their time is slim. The mission must proceed and we’re already seeing the first signs of Green-One’s self-rebellion.

It's nice to be able to find a new Clarke view, even after all this time. New and cool angles are my Holy Grail! ;)

oh...cool!
you turned my "no Captain behind the door" into a "two Captains" instead!
That's a great turn!
And I like the idea of the counteracting two personalities he has now a lot!
really Cool! :)
and I guess I already said, what I had to say about the illustration :)
I love it.

This turn of events WAS your fault! You put the idea in my mind of egg=new life, and then I just had to come up with a way of turning a simple "birth event" into something complicated. The repelling personalities just came out in mid-typing. So in all ways the outcome surprised ME, too!

I'm glad you like the image. I wish I knew why it strikes me so well... maybe because it's such a good match for what I saw in my head? It's rare that that happens. Well... it's rare I see ANYTHING in my head. Usually my visuals come together as organically as the writing process I described! :D

Thanks, bud! This is one of those rare pieces that just sorta shot, fully formed and colored, outta my head. My path to an end result is often more rambling and organic.

It's a lovely piece of work, and at least as realistic as many of the images that come out of the Hubble Space Telescope!

I also like your ongoing story. The captain underwent meiosis! :D

Certainly this evokes some of the Hubble nebula imagery, though I'm not sure what part of the EM spectrum those pics were shot in. But honestly, it's art and I'm going for an attractive color statement above all else :D

Glad you're diggin' the story! Love you "Primator" avatar, too ;)

Mondo nifty - yeah, 'red clay' isn't what one typically thinks of as a 'space' color, but this is really cool :).

The planet's original color/lighting came to mind when I made a lighting goof and was reminded of some of the artist renderings of brown dwarves. So I thought why not run with that angle? I'm not sure a brown dwarf could maintain a ring system... but I don't see why it would be out of the question with the radiative output being so low.... mostly IR, I think?

Oh, also, I think these sort of images are generally a composite of much more of the EM spectrum than just visible and infra red. Maybe even going into gamma and radio.

I guess you might want a small adjustment in translation, especially as things tend to be rather close together in Star Trek.
